Case Study of Succession

Aqua people were asked to work with an existing family business which was set up over 100 years ago.

Succession from one generation to the next meant that the family needed support to build an embryonic yet dependant family office platform.

Aqua helped to build and create effective corporate governance strategies assisting with the development of process driven platforms and creating a bridge to allow the family to become comfortable with an effective dependant family office environment that still had the checks and balances it needed to deal with the different requirements of the family members.

Aqua transitioned the relationship from a more bespoke traditional trust company who had worked with the Principals into a new Family office platform with separate advisory teams supporting the Family relative to:

  1. Investment and advisory functions;
  2. Treasury;
  3. Accountancy functions.

Aqua has supported the family throughout this process, drilling into the strategic support that has allowed Aqua to continue acting for the family both as a corporate and trust service provider but more importantly, adding strategic value in relation to the disposal and restructuring of assets.

Aqua people have supported the family with key appointments into the Family office and designing risk mitigation systems to enhance the overall return generated in absolute terms.

Aqua has ensured the family was properly protected from matters relative to confidentiality.

Aqua was instrumental in working with a leading family from the GCC to implement and create a Family office platform created in two parallel jurisdictions.

Aqua and its key team drove in strategies that would improve risk, mitigate costs, manage tax liability, driving in enhanced returns for the family, mainly focussed on inward real estate investments throughout the UK, enhancing return on investment by circa 15% and “future proofing” the structure in anticipation of ongoing fiscal change.

Aqua participated with the family in private equity-style strategies assisting in the acquisition of a significant listed financial institution, a regulated financial business, bringing both to a successful exit and delivering above average x5 return on investment.

Strategic support was provided both directly to the family; its second generation, and the advisory team.

With particular sensitivities brought to bear, Aqua was able to design and structure a framework that addressed the multiple needs of the family members.
